Sizzix Tutorial | Possibilities Canvas by Mou Saha

Hi everyone, Mou here with a mixed media canvas using Sizzix dies.

I'm absolutely in love with Jen Long's French Farmhouse collection of dies for Sizzix! They are so full of creative possibilities. I have used Sizzix dies on my layouts, cards, art journals, home decor, gifts and also on canvas. It's a new year and I hope it's filled with wonderful possibilities. I felt that the eggs in the wire basket make the perfect visual for that.

Here are the supplies I used:

Sizzix Bigz Die Eggs & Wire Basket

Sizzix Big Shot Machine Only (Powder Blue & Teal)

Others: 8 x 10 canvas, thin chipboard, patterned tissue paper by 7 Gypsies, acrylic paints, marker, pencil, paint brush, gel medium matte, gesso

And here are the steps.

Diecut the wire basket and a few eggs out of thin chipboard.

Choose patterned tissue paper or other pieces of paper, fabric, or ephemera to create the background on your 8 x 10 canvas.

Cut the tissue paper into smaller pieces and with matte gel medium, attach to the canvas. Seal the top with another coat of gel medium. The pieces may overlap, there may be some gaps, wrinkles, etc. and that's totally fine. Your first layer need not be perfect.

When the gel medium is completely dry, apply a thin coat of gesso to create a whitewash effect.

On the canvas, lay out your eggs and basket to find their best position for you. With a pencil mark the placement of the basket. With more gel medium, attach some of the eggs within the sketched perimeter of the basket. You could color your eggs before as well as after attaching them to the canvas. Attach the wire basket with a generous coat of gel medium. Because we are using chipboard diecuts (as paper might not be able to withstand the layering of mediums), it is important that there's enough medium to hold the basket in place. Attach a couple more eggs on the side. Let the medium dry thoroughly.

Paint the canvas with your favorite acrylic paint colors. Add details and shadows to the eggs. Outline the attached and painted diecut pieces with pencil. Write possibilities with a permanent brush marker. Draw and color freehand scallops to create a frame around the word. Draw some bigger scallops along the top edge of the canvas.

As much of the patterned tissue is now concealed by the paints. I added small strips of the same tissue along the left and bottom edges of the canvas with gel medium. To keep them from being too prominent, I blended them a bit with more paints.

And here's a close up
