Making the Flying Geese

  1. Using the quilt photo, pair one of the 3" x 6" finished large triangles with two of the 3 1/2" half-square solid triangles.
  2. With right sides together, sew the small triangles to two sides of the 3" x 6" large finished triangle. Press. (Diagram 1)
  3. Repeat the first two steps until you have 38 flying geese blocks.

Making the Ornament Blocks

  1. Using the quilt photo, pair a 3 1/2"x 9 1/2" with two of the 3 1/2" half-square solid triangles.
  2. With right sides together, sew the half square triangles to each end of the rectangle. Press. (Diagram 2)
  3. Repeat a second time.
  4. Sew a 2" solid strip of gold lengthwise to one of the 2" solid strips of either natural or ice. Press seams toward the gold.
  5. Cut the pieced strip in step 4 into 3 1/2" segments.
  6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 with the remaining 2" strips.
  7. Use diagram 3 to first put the rows of the ornament block together. Then sew the rows together to make the ornament block. Repeat until you have 11 ornament blocks.

Assembling the quilt top

  1. Use the quilt assembly diagram to put the top together.
  2. First sew the flying geese together in units as shown on the diagram.
  3. Then, if required, sew flying geese units and ornaments together to make larger units.
  4. Use the assembly diagram to sew the units together to make a vertical row.
  5. Sew the three vertical rows together to make the quilt.

Finishing

  1. Layer the backing, batting and quilt top. Quilt by hand or machine, as desired. Sew the binding strips together to form one long strip. Fold the binding in half, lengthwise, with wrong sides together and press. Sew the raw edges of the binding to the edges of the right side of the quilt. Turn the folded edge of the binding to the back side of the quilt and stitch in place by hand, mitering the corners.
