I am not sure if there can be anything more patriotic in So Cal Beach cities then this quilt! Being able to marry the love of country with the love for the sea is a great way to express oneself in a single wall hanging. It can be put up Memorial Day thru Labor Day OR all year long.

Start by ironing the fusible down to the red, white and blue fabrics. I chose to cut my fabrics into 5” strips so that I could get them thru my machine easier. If you don’t want to sew down the individual pieces then this is a great time to use a Heavy duty fusible.

Get ready for immediate gratification! I love the way that the creatures come to life once they are cut out. I immediately fell in love with the fish.

I chose to make my fish swim different ways in the rows just to add more interest; that or it was a cutting mistake…. I will never tell!

Once marking the middle of your piece, lay out all of the fish and shells and starfish. I did rotate the direction in which the red fish swam in each row. Also gave a little flair to having the Starfish changing direction within their layout, I can just imagine one of them crawling off the quilt. Actually, starfish can be quick little stinkers in real life.

It was fun to practice my FMQ skills with these shapes. I got really good at the shell details. I think I might even use a contrasting color the next time I make one of these!

I had such a great time using this quilt to expand my skill level and you can too, just make sure not to quilt yourself into a corner. Every time I quilt another quilt, I lessen the amount of times I run myself into a corner (as pictured here).

The most important part to remember is to have FUN! I know that I cannot improve my skills if I do not practice them and though sometimes they terrify me, I just close my eyes, take a deep breath and prepare to conquer the world (or at least the skill in front of me.)
