Hi everyone, Mou here! I totally love the idea of creating an art shrine dedicated to someone or something special! When I saw the My Happy Life dies by Crafty Chica, I immediately began imagining the ways I could combine those dies to create a shrine. Recently, I started reading a book about Frida Kahlo and it seemed only fitting to dedicate my little heart shrine to the iconic artist. This little shrine now adorns a bit of the gallery wall I have in my studio! Follow along to see how I created this art shrine.
- Sizzix Bigz XL Die - Heart Shrine
- Sizzix Thinlits Die - Birds #4
- Sizzix Thinlits Die Set 2PK - Banners, Papel Picado
- Sizzix Big Shot Machine Only (White & Gray)
- Sizzix Accessory - Cutting Pads, Extended, 1 Pair
- Sizzix Accessory - Standard Magnetic Platform for Wafer-Thin Dies
- Sizzix Accessory - Cutting Pads, Standard, 1 Pair (Purple w/Silver Glitter)
- Sizzix Little Sizzles - 6" x 13" Mat Board Pack, 6 Cream Sheets
Other Materials Used:
- Gelatos colors
- Paint brush
- Texture Gem Pearl
- Watercolor paper
In order to build the Heart Shrine, you'll need two of the hearts, half hearts and leaves and one of each of the other pieces.
To die-cut the Heart Shrine, create the following Sizzix Sandwich: on a Sizzix Accessory - Cutting Pads, Extended, lay the Sizzix Bigz XL Die - Heart Shrine blade-side up. Place a Sizzix Little Sizzles - 6" x 13" Mat Board, Cream on the die and cover with the other Extended Cutting Pad. Pass the whole sandwich through the Sizzix Big Shot Machine. Repeat to die-cut the doubles pieces.
To diecut the Bird piece, create the following Sizzix Sandwich: on a Sizzix Accessory Magnetic Platform For Wafer-Thin Dies, lay another Sizzix Accessory Standard Cutting Pad. On it, lay out the Sizzix Thinlits Die - Birds #4 die blade side up. Place watercolor paper on it and cover with the other Standard Cutting Pad. Pass the whole Sizzix Sandwich through the Sizzix Big Shot machine.
Repeat the exact same sandwich technique with Sizzix Thinlits Die Set 2PK - Banners, Papel Picado.
Color the die-cut pieces with Gelatos colors or your favorite medium.
Fold along the crease lines to assemble the box part of the Heart Shrine. Attach the scalloped back board inside the box. Use adhesive to hold the flaps in place. Attach the base and the pediment. Decorate the pediment with flower and leaves.
Attach the half hearts on either side of the box. Decorate them with the die-cut hearts.
Attach the bird framework behind the box as shown.
I drew my own figure of Frida Kahlo holding a burning heart. You could choose to draw your own image of someone or something personally meaningful to you. You could also use a photo or a three-dimensional figurine or one of Crafty Chica's stamp/die set to place inside the shrine.
I doodled with texture paint on my shrine to give it a shiny finish.
I hope you enjoyed the tutorial and would try these dies to create a shrine of your own!
