Hi there! It's Laura from Make Life Lovely, and today I've got a FUN Cat in the Hat cupcake toppers tutorial for you to celebrate Dr. Seuss' upcoming birthday on March 2!
Every single night without fail I read a Dr. Seuss book to my two youngest kids. I firmly believe that Dr. Seuss was a brilliant man! My parents read me his books every night when I was a child, and between that, me reading to my kids, and me reading these books to 7 years of elementary school classes when I was a teacher, and you can see why I love him so much!
These Cat in the Hat cupcake toppers are really fun to make using Barbara Walton's Medallions Decorative Strip die. This die comes with two different medallions, but I used just the scalloped shape medallions for these toppers.
First, I die cut the medallions and circular centers from red and white card stock using my Big Shot machine. I stacked the Extended Spacer Platform, (Sizzix no longer sells this, but your Extended Multipurpose Platform will also work) a Decorative Strip Cutting Pad, the die cutting side up, the paper, and another cutting pad, then ran it all through my Big Shot. Then, I folded the strip along the scored edges. Next, glue the two ends of the strip together with hot glue (a quick dry adhesive will work too). Turn the medallion upside down, flatten it, and hot glue one of the round centers onto the back.
Now you've got a sweet little medallion! To customize it for Dr. Seuss' birthday, I downloaded some Dr. Seuss clipart, then sized it to fit the cupcake toppers. You can print the free printable Cat in the Hat cupcake printables here.
Once you've printed and cut the characters, glue them onto the front of the medallions. Cut some red and white striped straws in half, then glue the medallions onto the top of the straw.
Place the straws into the cupcakes, and you're ready to celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday and all of his amazing books!
