DIY Pumpkin in a Truck Pillow!

Hi, it’s Jen from The Smitten Chicken again! I am sharing a fun tutorial with you today. This is the start of a new series I’m doing called, “What’s in the truck?” I love to decorate for the holidays, so I will be filling this truck with fun holiday surprises. The first one for today? A pumpkin!

First, cut your pillow background to 8 1/2" x 14 1/2". Then, using the Square 2" Bigz Die, die-cut 26 squares. Sew 7 squares to the bottom and top of the background as shown in the diagram. Then sew 6 squares to each side.

To make the pillow fit my pillow form better, I added a 3/4" border around the edges. You may need to adjust the border depending on the pillow form size you use.

Now it’s time for the appliqué! Fuse the Heat n Bond Adhesive to the “wrong” side of your truck and pumpkin fabric. Then, make a Sizzix Sandwich: Cutting Pad, die, fabric and Cutting Pad. Now you can run the sandwich through your machine to die-cut.

Place the truck and pumpkin centered on the background fabric. Use an iron to fuse the truck and pumpkin into place.  You’ll want to stitch around the truck and pumpkin to help secure it. Use matching thread to stitch it into place.

Time to make a quilt sandwich. We are all about the sandwiches today! A quilt sandwich is the pillow top, batting and backing fabric. Baste your pillow top and quilt it.

I chose to do crosshatch quilting on my pillow. You can finish off your pillow as you like. I prefer to use a zipper closure in the bottom of the pillow.

Enjoy your fun Fall pillow! What other holidays should we fill the truck with? To follow along with more of my quilting adventures, stop by my blog. You can also visit me on Instagram, Facebook, or Pinterest.

Chirp Out!
