Hi Sizzix friends, Nicole here from Modern Handcraft with a favorite holiday project - a festive Halloween pillow! Pillows are my most favorite to make for the holidays, they are a quick make, perfect for covering up existing pillows in your house, and take up very little room while storing away.
This pillow uses a fun Sizzix Bigz L Die - Diamond 5" sides and two coordinating fabrics for a modern Halloween look.
First you will need to choose at least two different fabrics for your pillow front. You can also use several fabrics for a scrappier look, just alternating the fabrics in the placement. I cut my fabric into 6" strips to make it easier to run through my machine.
Once you have your fabric prepped, you will now make a Sizzix sandwich - Standard cutting pad, Bigz L Diamond 5" die, layers of fabric (up to 8), Standard cutting pad, and roll through your Sizzix Fabi or Big Shot machine.
Arrange your cut diamonds into the design that you like best. I am making a 20" x 20" pillow so I arranged them into 6 rows of 5 diamonds alternating the fabrics and then staggering them in each row.
To help keep your diamonds lined up properly when sewing together, make sure to leave a 1/4" triangle visible on each end. Sew your diamonds together using a 1/4" seam allowance.
Once all rows are sewn together, line up and iron your back seams in alternating directions to create a nice nesting when you sew your rows together. Nest your seams and pin in place. Sew rows together using a 1/4" seam allowance.
Here is your assembled layout for your pillow front, now time to trim up.
Trim up your pillow front to measure 20.5" x 20.5".
Pin or spray baste your pillow front to a piece of batting or fusible fleece. Quilt the front of the pillow - I used a "stitch in the ditch" method where I quilted along each seam.
You will now have a finished pillow top measuring 20.5" x 20.5".
To make your pillow back, cut two rectangles of backing fabric 20.5" x 15". On one side of each rectangle fold over the 20.5" edge half an inch - iron and fold over again - iron. Stitch along the edge to secure the fold.
To add your envelope backing lay your pillow front face up on your table. Lay each backing piece face down on top of your pillow front, overlapping the back pieces.
Pin around the perimeter of your pillow and sew around the edges using a 1/4" seam allowance.
Turn inside out and you now have a fun Diamond Halloween Pillow!
Finished pillow size is 20" x 20" and fits a 20" pillow form.
Thanks for stopping by today friends and I hope you enjoyed today's project!
