Sizzix Tutorial | Melon Slice Pillow by Karin Jordan

Hi! It's Karin here with a Sizzix Tutorial on how to make a quilted 20" Half Square Triangle (HST) pillow. Orange and green is one my favorite color combinations, and I've called this pattern Melon Slice. You can stick with this color scheme if you like, however, I'm also including a HST coloring sheet for you to print and design your own pillow!

I chose five tangerine-colored fabrics and five lime-colored ones. I decided to use the fabric on the far left — the orange slices — for the back of the pillow.

Please click here to open and print the blank coloring sheet. There are two of these grids on one page.

For this pillow we will be using the Sizzix Bigz die Half Square Triangles, 4 1/2" Finished Square. Create the Sizzix sandwich: cutting pad, die (blade side up), fabric and cutting pad.

Run the sandwich through the Fabi or Big Shot. Several layers of fabric can be die cut at the same time.

For this 20" pillow you will need to die cut 16 orange triangles, 9 green triangles and 25 white triangles, for a total of 50 triangles. Or, if you are designing your own pillow, count how many of each color you will need before die cutting.

Lay the triangles out on a flat surface or design wall. My design wall tutorial can be found here.

Sew each pair of HST's together with a 1/4" seam allowance, as shown. The die conveniently cuts the corners so there's no trimming later.

Open the square and press the seam open.

The 25 squares are now ready to be pieced together.

Sew the top row together from left to right. Press the seams open. Repeat for the remaining four rows. Sew rows one and two together, rows three and four together and then sew the pairs of rows together to finish the pillow top.

Cut one piece of background fabric to match the size of the pillow front, which should be 20.5" square. Cut two pieces of Pellon® 987F Fusible Fleece, 22" square each. Center the fabric on the rough side of the Fusible Fleece and press according to manufacturer's instructions.

Quilt the front and the back of the pillow as desired. I like to straight-line quilt the backs of my pillows with 50wt Aurifil thread. For pillow assembly instructions with a hidden zipper closure, please see my tutorial here.

I hope you have fun with the coloring sheet. Even with all the design software on the market, I still like to drag out the colored pencils.

Thanks for stopping by!
