This Shimmery Butterfly Tag DIY Is What Dreams Are Made Of

flutter_tag_tutorial1-Anna-Karin

Hello everyone! It is Anna-Karin here today with a very shimmery and shiny tutorial. I hope you are enjoying summer so far. We try to spend as much time as possible outdoors, even when the weather isn't perfect: walking, cycling and swimming. We are lucky to have many lakes close by (there are lakes everywhere in Sweden), and the sea is not too far away either.

Today's tutorial really shimmers and shines, perfect for summer. I will show some idea for how you can use Tim Holtz's Flutter stamps and coordinating dies, as well as a fun mixed media background. The techniques work on any type of project, but I was in the mood for a tag.

Start by white embossing butterflies on watercolor paper.

Each butterfly in the Flutter stamp set has a coordinating die. The easiest way to check which die belongs to which butterfly is to turn the sheet of stamps around (so you can see the printed back of the stamps) and place the dies on the respective stamps. When die cutting, it is best to use the Sizzix Magnetic Platform. Use this sandwich: Magnetic Platform, Cutting Pad, paper, die facing down, second Cutting Pad.

I really like how neat and even these look.

flutter_tag4

Smear Distress Inks on a craft sheet, mist with water and pick up with a paint brush to paint the butterflies. The embossing will resist the ink.

flutter_tag5

Mist with Pearl Mica Spray for shine. When dry, shape the wings a little.

flutter_tag6

Die cut the coordinating bodies from white Brite-Ons Shimmery paper.

flutter_tag7

For the feelers, I cut a piece of wire, folded in half and formed each end into spirals.

flutter_tag1a

Now to the tag. Die cut two tags from manila cardstock with the Tag & Bookplates die. Die cut one of the tags repeatedly with the brick die from Tim's Mixed Media #4 set.

flutter_tag8

Adhere the die cut tag to the solid tag with Matte Collage Medium.

flutter_tag9

Coat the tag with gesso and when dry, apply Opaque Crackle Texture Paste with a palette knife. Most of the crackle paste will end up in the recessed areas. Leave to dry and cracks will appear.

flutter_tag10

Paint the whole tag with Pearl Metallic paint. The effect is hard to photograph. It is very pearly.

flutter_tag11

When the paint is dry, apply Distress Crayons here over the crackle areas and rub with your finger. Use a slightly moist cloth to remove excess color.

flutter_tag12

The sentiment was die cut with the Thin Traveler Words from white Brite-Ons Shimmery paper. I also cut watercolor paper to size and watercolored with Distress Inks.

flutter_tag13

Dye a piece of crinkle ribbon by pulling it across Distress Ink pads and mist both it, and the coloured strips, with Pearl spray.

flutter_tag14

Glue the die cut words over the colored strips.

flutter_tag15

Glue the bodies to the butterflies and the feelers underneath.

flutter_tag16

I also added some idea-ology Bouquet flowers to the tag.

flutter_tag17

The butterflies are such fun to color and have wonderful details.

flutter_tag18

I adhered my butterflies with foam dots, for dimension.

flutter_tag20

Since the Crackle Paste was applied with a palette knife, it is much thicker in the recessed areas and the cracks are therefore bigger there,

flutter_tag19

It is hard to capture all the shimmer on this tag. Everything shimmers, except for the white flowers, from the pearl paint, pearl mist and the Brite-Ons paper.

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial! Thank you so much for stopping by today!

Happy summer crafting!

Anna-Karin
