Hello Sizzix friends, it's Karin here today with a Sizzix Tutorial for a Dala Horse Wall Hanging.

Dala Horse Wall Hanging by Karin Jordan - a Sizzix tutorial

I channeled my five year old daughter to make this as she is all about pink, purple and horses. This will be hung in her room over her bed. Finished size is 29 x 29".

Choose four fabrics and cut a 12.5" square out of each of them. Also cut 2 strips out of each color, 3 x 12½" and 3 x 15". Set the 12 cut pieces aside. Choose four fabrics to use for the horse appliqués. Cut the fabric so that it covers the blades of the die as this is a great way to use scraps! Fuse a piece of Pellon 805 Wonder-Under® (slightly smaller than the fabric) to the wrong side of the fabric following manufacturer's instructions. Using the Sizzix Bigz Pro Die Dala Horse and the Sizzix Big Shot Pro Machine, make the Sizzix sandwich and die cut the shapes. Be careful to position the fabric either right side up or face down depending upon which way you'd like your horse to face.

To be able to easily position the horse in the same place in each square, center one horse and with a 12½" square quilting ruler, mark the feet and nose position with tape (I used washi tape). For the horses facing the opposite direction, simply flip the quilting ruler over and use it the other way.

Remove the paper backing on the horses, and then position and fuse them to the squares following manufacturer's instructions. Tip: If you accidentally get the gooey part of he Wonder-Under® on your iron, it will come off with a dryer sheet! With an appliqué stitch on your sewing machine, appliqué the horses.

Sew the top two squares together using a ¼" seam allowance and press seams open. Repeat for the bottom two squares. Sew the top square to the bottom squares and press seams open.

Sew the side border pieces together first (use the shorter strips for the sides). Press the seams open and sew to the body of the wall hanging. Trim to fit if necessary. Repeat for top and bottom border strips, lining up the seams as you go. Fuse the top to a 32" square piece of Pellon® 987F Fusible Fleece according to manufacturer's instructions.

Choose a backing fabric cut slightly wider than the top and make a quilt sandwich. Quilt as desired. I kept it simple as it is intended as a wall hanging. You will need 130" of 2¼" binding to complete the project.

Once I add a hanging sleeve to the back it'll be up on the wall in my daughter's room. She is super excited to have this bright, cheerful horse art on her wall, and she still thinks it's cool that it's 'Made by Mom.'
