Hi Sizzix friends, Nicole here from Modern Handcraft today with a fun felt and fabric Sizzix Tutorial to brighten up your space . The Flower Power Pillow!
You can customize the colors of this for your home decor or holiday. Red flowers on a Christmas pillow for the holidays, black and white flowers on an orange pillow for Halloween Even red white and blue would be fun for the Fourth of July!
For this project I chose a fun black and white text print fabric and colorful felt to make the flowers really pop. The flower die has the perfect layout to use smaller felt scraps that you have left over from other projects so mixing and matching colors is very easy.
You will begin by selecting 3 - 4 pieces of felt, or scraps to lay on your Sizzix Flowers #3 Die with designs by Echo Park. Make your Sizzix sandwich by layering a cutting pad, the flower die face up, felt layers and second cutting pad. Run your Sizzix Sandwich through your Big Shot machine. Remove and place your flower pieces to the side. I made a total of 25 flowers for this project.
Now that you have all of your flower pieces cut, you can now mix and match the top, middle and back flower pieces to create your colorful flowers. The Flower #3 die also makes a small circle for the center but I chose to omit that for this project.
For my pillow front I cut a piece of my black and white fabric 19" x 19" square, and backed it with a fusible fleece. The added fleece layer makes a nice padding for the pillow front and using a fusible piece makes quilting not necessary to keep it in place. Since I created a square pillow I did a 5 x 5 flower pattern on the front using a total of 25 flowers. Leave room on your sides for sewing the pillow together.
To keep the three layers of felt stable and in place while sewing. Pinning in place works well, or you may use a fabric glue.
At your machine add a quick 1/2" stitch down the middle of each flower to attach it. Keeping it in a straight line lets the flower petals fluff nicely on the pillow.
Cut an additional fabric piece measuring 19" 19 and finish off your pillow with a zipper or cut two pieces measuring 19" x 14" and create an envelope backing.
Fluff the pillow cover and insert pillow form. The finished size of your pillow should now measure 18" x 18" square. You can leave the flowers fluffed and three dimensional or press them down and have a flat look like below.
I hope you enjoyed today's tutorial - thanks for stopping by!
