Summer Floral Sandals: A 10 Minute DIY!

Summer Floral Sandals: A 10 Minute DIY!

Hey friends!  Adrianne here with you today to share a quick and easy way to dress up your toes this summer by adding embellishments to basic sandals and flip flops.

Today I'll show you how you can make a secure yet non-permanent modification to any pair of sandals.  I'm even using a re-purposed t-shirt for the fabric and raiding my button jar, which makes this a fun and affordable shoe makeover!

Summer Floral Sandals: A 10 Minute DIY!

I have a certain little sister getting married this summer, and I have been using the new Sizzix Bigz Eileen Hull floral dies for all kinds of accessories.

Today's soft white theme is a fun casual option and would be perfect for an outdoor bride. Don't forget, you can get creative, and makeover your sandals in colors as bright as you are!

The Sizzix Bigz dies can cut through several layers of fabric at a time, so for this project I cut 4 small squares of t-shirt material the same size as the Pansy Flower die for each shoe.  Repurposed t-shirt fabric (or a jersey knit) is perfect for this project because the petals will naturally curl a little, and t-shirt fabric does not unravel like other fabrics can.

For each flower, just stack the fabric on top of the die and place an acrylic cutting pad on the top and bottom to create your "Sizzix Sandwich".  Then roll it through your Big Shot to instantly die cut several layers.

Arrange the die cut fabric so that the largest pieces are on the bottom, and rotate the layers so that all the gaps between petals are filled.  Then add the medium sized die cuts, then arrange the smallest ones on top.  The Pansy Flower die has a pre-punched hole in the center which is perfect for die cutting paper and matboard, but you will stitch around it to secure the layers of fabric for this project.  You don't need great sewing skills for this step!  Just thread a needle with about 20" of embroidery floss, and stitch through all the layers until they're secure.  Do not cut your thread yet.

Next, you'll attach the flower to the shoe!  We will simply be tying the flower on securely, so if you wish to remove the embellishment later, you can snip the threads and the shoes are undamaged.

To secure the flower to the shoe and to finish the center, place the button on top of the flower and as you stitch through the hole at the top of the button, pass the thread under the thong of the sandal.  Alternate the side of the thong you wrap around so that the flower is secure on both the left and the right side of the sandal.  Then, tie off your thread and trim away the excess.

Finally, I spritzed these flowers with a bit of spray glitter to give them a little shimmer, but this step is optional!

Summer Floral Sandals: A 10 Minute DIY!This little makeover can be accomplished in about ten minutes, so it's a great last-minute project if you're looking for something special.  Thanks for joining me today and I'd love to hear if you give this idea a try!
