Tutorial: A Gift For Mom

Hello Scrappers, it's Aida here !

No matter on which side of the world we are, Mother's Day is a much looked forward to event for many families. In Singapore where I'm from, restaurants are packed with multi-generational families enjoying a meal together where mums, grandmothers and aunts are presented with bouquets of flowers.

Today my project is a gift idea for a Mother's Day and can be displayed in the home. More than anything I wanted a project that was understated, elegant and timeless, with touches of pale gold, When it was finally done, I have to say it made me happy to see the piece come together as how it was imagined.

Sizzix Die Cutting Tutorial: A Gift for Mom by Aida Haron

These are the steps of how I created this piece:

Die cut 2 Butterflies in chipboard and 1 in white cardstock with : 656552, Bigz, Butterfly #2

I like working with MDF tiles as they are easily available at Dollar stores all over Singapore. If you prefer, you can use canvas as well.

Glue 2 chipboard Butterfly shaped die-cuts together, then adhere to the top corner of the 8"x8" MDF tile. This is to create height and a 3-D feel to the project. Next, a layer of white gesso was applied to even out the tone for the base of the project. Once completely dry, I painted the whole piece in soft shades of blush pink, pale green and yellow.

Select a stencil you like and press Distress Paints over the design (here I used a Tattered Angel's stencil). Press the stencil (with the paint side down) to the die-cut cardstock Butterfly.

Distress Paint in Spun Sugar.

Working quickly, pour UTEE over the Butterfly making sure you get a good layer of UTEE where the paint is wet. Melt the UTEE with a heating tool. This will create a resist for the other mediums.

Ink the Butterfly with Distress Inks Scattered Straw and Mustard Seed. Gold gilding paste has become a staple in my projects and when using this, you have to remember to be very sparing, less is really more ! Rub the paste gently on to the embossed parts of the butterfly.

Using Little Sizzles 6x13 mat-board in cream sheet, die-cut the word MOM using the Bigz Serif Essentials die.

Color the letters using Distress Inks Tattered Rose, Mustard Seed and Worn Lipstick. After you are satisfied with how the colors look, it's time to emboss them with UTEE.

Embossing with UTEE in the usual way will give a slightly mottled look, with tiny pits in the finishing. This is perfect for gilding as the texture will look more worn rather than slick.

Die cut a small round frame using 657094 Sizzlits die-set 3pk Decorative Frames set. Color using the same inks as the word MOM.

Finally assemble the whole project by adding embellishments of your choice.

The pieces all assembled.

I love that the letters with the gold gilding turned out how I wanted !

The pretty word tag is by Dear Lizzy, the pendant is from my own supply.

Thank you for dropping by, have a wonderful Mother's Day !
