- Read several fairy tales (Cinderella, Snow White, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, The Lost Unicorn or The Valiant Little Tailor) or have the students write book reports on various fairy tales, incorporating the stick puppets into their oral reports.
Embellish or assemble the Unicorn Puppet
- Die-cut the unicorn using white and pink construction paper. Leave the white unicorn whole, and trim the mane, tail and hooves away from the pink unicorn.
- Attach the trimmed pink unicorn to the white Unicorn. Use crayons or markers for shading.
- Attach a piece of colored paper behind the eye (Main Photo).
- Insert a stir stick or a ice pop stick through the slits.
Embellish or assemble the Princess Puppet
- Die-cut the princess using multiple colors of construction paper, including a skin color (use colors to reflect the cultural make -up of your students). Leave the base skin-color princess whole.
- Attach a piece of colored paper behind the eyes and mouth (Figure A).
- Die-cut two different colors for the gown. Leave one gown whole. Draw two lines on the second gown to trim for a petticoat, and attach the trimmed piece over the whole gown (Figure B). Students can design their own special dress. Use a white pen to color the pearls or lace on the gown (Main Photo).
- Insert a stir stick or ice pop stick through the slits.
Embellish or assemble the Mermaid Puppet
- To make the mermaid, die-cut the mermaid using green, yellow and a skin-tone construction paper. Leave the skin-colored mermaid whole.
- Trim the lower body and bra of the green mermaid, and trim the hair of the yellow mermaid and attach to the skin-colored mermaid.
- With scallop scissors, create small strips from contrasting paper, and attach to the mermaid body to replicate the look of scales (Main Photo).
- Insert a stir stick or ice pop stick through the slits.
- Students can use their stick puppets to accentuate storytelling and class plays.
