Pom-Pom Pals

Supplies Used: Adhesive, Cardstock or construction paper, Crayons, colored markers or pens, Scissors, Yarn

The teacher will die-cut the materials for student use prior to the lesson.

1. Die-cut the Pom-Pom Pals using multiple colors of construction paper or cardstock. Each design requires two matching base shapes (Figure A).
2. Embellish the details of each face with crayons or colored markers or pens. Place a contrasting piece of paper behind the eye hole of each design (Figure B).
3. Adhere only the faces together of each pair of shapes.
4. Cut a 12" length of yarn and slide it between the two layered shapes so the yarn sits just below the head (Figure C).
5. While keeping the 12" piece of yarn up and out of the way, wrap several layers of yarn around both sides of the circular body. The more layers that are wrapped, the fluffier the body will be (Figure D).
6. Place the tips of scissors between the paper layers of the body and cut through the wrapped yarn, being careful to avoid cutting the 12" piece of yarn at the top. Start cutting at each end of the opening in the body and stop at the head (Figure E).
7. Hold the 12" piece of yarn at the ends and pull it down on both sides to tie it in a knot, holding all of the cut yarn in the middle to create the pom-pom poof (Figure F). Trim any long strands of yarn from the pom-pom.
8. Fold along the perforations at the bottom of each body, which will allow each shape to stand up. Some of the animals have feet that can be attached with adhesive to the body by aligning the fold lines on the feet and body and attaching one foot to each side of the body (Figure G).
9. Once students have created a few of the die-cut Pom-Pom Pals (Main Photo) they can begin making more of their own design.
