Notes:
- The quilt directions will be done in sections to complete and finish the quilt.
- Finished Size: 48 1/2" x 48 1/2"
- WOF = width of fabric
- Basic unit = 3 1/2" Half-Square Triangle sewn to a 3" x 6" Trapezoid (See Basic Unit Diagram and Diagram 1.)
Block 1:
- Cut four 3" x 6" Rectangles in yellow, four 3" x 6" Trapezoids in medium blue, and four 3 1/2" Half-Square Triangles in dark blue.
- Make four basic units sewing the dark blue Triangles to the medium blue Trapezoids.
- Sew the long side of the basic unit to the long side of a yellow Rectangle as shown in Diagram 3. Repeat until you have four.
- Sew the four units created in step 3 to make the block as shown in Diagram 3.
Block 2:
- Cut four 3" x 6" Trapezoids in dark blue, four 3 1/2" Half-Square Triangles in yellow, eight 3 1/2" Half-Square Triangles in white background, and four 3 1/2" Squares in white background.
- Make four basic units sewing the white background Half-Square Triangles to the dark blue Trapezoids.
- Sew the long side of a yellow Half-Square Triangle to the long side of the white background Half-Square Triangle. Repeat three more times.
- Sew the basic unit, pieced square created in step 3, and a white background square as shown below. Repeat until you have four as shown in Diagram 4.
- Sew the four units created in step 3 to make the block. See Diagram 5.
Block 3:
- Cut four 3" x 6" Trapezoids in dark blue, four 3" x 6" Trapezoids in yellow, and eight 3 1/2" Half-Square Triangles in white background.
- Make four basic units sewing the white background Half-Square Triangles to the dark blue Trapezoids.
- Make four basic units sewing the white background Half-Square Triangles to the yellow Trapezoids.
- Sew one basic unit from step 2 and one basic unit from step 3 as show below. Repeat until you have four. See Diagram 6.
- Sew the four units created in step 4 to make the block. See Diagram 7.
Block 4:
- Cut two 3" x 6" Trapezoid in dark blue, cut two 3" x 6" Trapezoid in dark blue, four 3 1/2" Half-Square Triangles in white background, two 3" x 6" finished Rectangle in white background, and one 6 1/2" square in yellow.
- Make four basic units with the blue Trapezoids and the white background Half-Square Triangles.
- Assemble the block in rows as shown in Diagram 8.
Block 5:
- Cut two 3" x 6" Trapezoid in dark blue, cut two 3" x 6" Trapezoid in dark blue, four 3 1/2" Half-Square Triangles in white background, two 3" x 6" Rectangles in dark blue, two 3" x 6" Triangles in yellow, and two 3" x 6" Triangles in white background.
- Make four basic units with the blue Trapezoids and the white background Half-Square Triangles.
- Sew the yellow and white background 3" x 6" Triangles into a block as shown in Diagram 9.
- Assemble the block in rows as shown in Diagram 10.
Block 6:
- Cut four 3" x 6" Rectangles in white background, four 3" x 6" Trapezoids in medium blue, and two 3 1/2" Half-Square Triangles in yellow, and two 3 1/2" Half-Square Triangles in white background.
- Make two basic units sewing the yellow Triangles to the medium blue Trapezoids and two sewing the white background Triangles to the medium blue Trapezoids.
- Sew the long side of the basic unit to the long side of a yellow Rectangle as shown below. Repeat until you have four. See Diagram 11.
- Sew the four units you have created in step 3 to make the block as shown in Diagram 12.
Block 7:
- Cut four 3" x 6" Trapezoids in white background, four 3 1/2" Half-Square Triangles in medium blue, one 3 1/2" Square in medium blue, and two 2" x WOF strips in yellow. Sub cut the 2" strips into two 2" x 9 1/2" and two 2" x 12 1/2" pieces.
- Make four basic units sewing the medium blue Triangles to the white background Trapezoids.
- Sew a partial seam as shown, with the medium blue Square to a basic unit made in step 2. See Diagram 13.
- Add the next three basic units as shown in Diagram 14 then finish the 1st partial seam.
- Sew the 2" x 9 1/2" strips to opposite sides of the block. Press.
- Sew the 2" x 12 1/2" strips to the remaining sides of the block. Press.
Block 8:
- Cut four 3" x 6" Trapezoids in dark blue, four 3" x 6" Trapezoids in dark blue, four 3 1/2" Half-Square Triangles in yellow, and four 3 1/2" Half-Square Triangles in white background.
- Make two basic units sewing the white background Half-Square Triangles to the dark blue Trapezoids. Make two basic units sewing the yellow Half-Square Triangles to the dark blue Trapezoids.
- Make two basic units sewing the white background Half-Square Triangles to the dark blue R Trapezoids. Make two basic units sewing the yellow Half-Square Triangles to the dark blue R Trapezoids.
- Sew the basic units together in rows as shown in Diagram 15.
Block 9:
- Cut four 3" x 6" Trapezoids in white background, four 3" x 6" Trapezoids in dark blue, and eight 3 1/2" Half-Square Triangles in yellow.
- Make four basic units sewing the yellow Half-Square Triangles to the dark blue Trapezoids. Make four basic units sewing the yellow Half-Square Triangles to the white background Trapezoids.
- Sew the basic units together in rows as shown in Diagram 16.
Adding the Sashing:
- Cut eight 2" strips x WOF from medium blue. Sub cut these into twenty-four 2" x 12 1/2". With the leftover yellow 2" strip, cut sixteen 2" x 2" squares.
- There are four rows that alternate the 2" squares of yellow and the 2" x 12 1/2" Rectangles of medium blue. Each row has four 2" squares and three Rectangles. All the rows start and end with a 2" Square. Press the seams toward the Rectangles.
- There are three rows that alternate the 2" x 12 1/2" Rectangles of medium blue and the 12 1/2" sampler blocks. Each row has four Rectangles and three sampler blocks. All the rows start and end with a Rectangle. Use the quilt picture as a guide for block placement. Press the seams towards the Rectangles.
- Sew the quilt rows together alternating the block and the sashing rows. The rows will start and end with a sashing row. Press. The center of the quilt has been completed.
Adding the Outside Borders:
- Sew the 3 1/2" x WOF of the border fabric together to make one long strip. From this cut two 3 1/2" x 42 1/2" pieces and two 3 1/2" x 48 1/2" pieces.
- Sew the 3 1/2" x 42 1/2" pieces to opposite sides of the quilt. Press.
- Sew the 3 1/2" x 48 1/2" pieces to the remaining sides of the quilt. Press.
Finishing:
- Sew the two 1 1/2 yd pieces of the backing fabric together along the selvedge edge to make the backing.
- Layer the backing, batting, and quilt top. Quilt by hand or machine, as desired.
- Sew the binding strips together to form one long strip. Fold the binding in half, lengthwise, with wrong sides together and press.
- Sew the raw edges of the binding to the edges of the right side of the quilt. Turn the folded edge of the binding to the back side of the quilt and stitch in place by hand, mitering the corners.
