Notes:
- Finished Size: 38 1/2" x 48 1/2"
- All seam allowances are 1/4" unless noted.
- WOF = width of fabric
- To make piecing the curved seams easier, find and mark the center of each of the curved seams. Match the centers and pin. Do the same with the ends. A few extra pins in between will hold everything in place while sewing the seam.
Piecing the Quilt Center:
- Always refer to the quilt photo for color placement. Use a design wall to lay out the entire quilt before starting to sew. This way you will be able to check the circle pattern of different color football shapes before you start sewing.
- Start with Diagram 1 and stitch a football shape to the center from one 1/4" seam intersection to the other 1/4" seam intersection. Use Diagrams 2 through 5 to continue adding pieces to the row in this same manner.
- The Assembly Diagram shows how the rows will look when they are pieced. Continue piecing the rows until you have three rows using football and center shapes labeled as rows 1, 3, and 5 on the Assembly Diagram. You will have two rows using the football and center shapes labeled as rows 2 and 4 on the Assembly Diagram.
- Sew rows 1 through 5 together, one arch segment at a time.
- When the five rows are sewn together, sew the final row of footballs to the top edge of the quilt. Press the quilt center.
- Using the Assembly Diagram, trim the quilt as shown by the dashed lines to make a rectangle.
Assembling the Quilt:
- Cut the 1 1/2" strips into two 1 1/2" x 40 1/2" and two 1 1/2" x 32 1/2" pieces.
- Sew the 1 1/2" x 40 1/2" strips to the long sides of the quilt. Press.
- Sew the 1 1/2" x 32 1/2" strips to the remaining two sides of the quilt. Press.
- Cut the 3 1/2" strips into two 3 1/2" x 42 1/2" and two 3 1/2" x 38 1/2" pieces.
- Sew the 3 1/2" x 42 1/2" strips to the long sides of the quilt. Press.
- Sew the 3 1/2" x 38 1/2" strips to the remaining two sides of the quilt. Press.
Making the Yo-Yo Flowers:
- Take a 4" yellow circle and with a large basting stitch, turn over and sew approximately 1/4" hem around the edge. Draw the thread up as tight as you can and tie off. You have made a yo-yo. Arrange so the hole is in the center. Repeat 17 more times.
Finishing:
- Sew the two 1 1/4 yd pieces of the backing fabric together along the selvedge edge to make the backing.
- Layer the backing, batting, and quilt top. Quilt by hand or machine, as desired.
- Sew the binding strips together to form one long strip. Fold the binding in half, lengthwise, with wrong sides together and press.
- Sew the raw edges of the binding to the edges of the right side of the quilt. Turn the folded edge of the binding to the back side of the quilt and stitch in place by hand, mitering the corners.
- Sew a yellow yo-yo to each intersection of footballs.
