1/4 ydLight teal printCut (1) 7" Square for backing
Cut (1) 2" wide Strips for binding
8" x 8"Heat-resistant batting
12Cardstock Hexagons with 1 1/2" sides

Notes:

  • Finished Size: 6 1/2" x 6 1/2"
  • English paper-piecing basic instructions: With the wrong side of a 1 3/4" fabric Hexagon facing up, place a 1 1/2" cardstock Hexagon (item # 659144) inside, centering the cardstock. Turn the 1/4" of fabric around the outside edge over the cardstock and tack in place at each corner. Whipstitch the finished Hexagons together with the cardstock left inside.

Piecing the Project:

  1. Using the English paper-piecing method above, prepare all 12 fabric Hexagons.
  2. Sew the fabric Hexagons together, starting in the center to form a potholder front. Work from the wrong side of the Hexagons and use a whipstitch to sew them together. You will have to bend the cardstock to make it easier to sew.
  3. Continue adding Hexagons, leaving the cardstock in place.
  4. Carefully remove all the cardstock from the Hexagons.

Finishing:

  1. Layer the backing, batting and potholder top. Quilt by hand or machine, as desired. Square up to the largest dimensions, approximately 7" x 7".
  2. Sew binding strips together to form one long strip. Fold wrong sides together, lengthwise, and press.
  3. With a 1/4" seam, sew the raw edges of the binding to the edges of the right side of the potholder. Turn the folded edge of the binding to the back side of the potholder and stitch in place by hand, rounding the corners.
