Storm at Sea Quilt

Fabric Requirements:

Notes:

• Finished Size: 39 1/2" x 51"
• All seam allowances are 1/4" unless noted.
• Fat 1/4 = approximately 18" x 21"
• WOF = width of fabric

Piecing the Quilt:

1. Sew a 2" Half-Square Triangle to each side of a 2 1/2" Square, sewing to opposite sides first. Press. Repeat until you have 20 units. Sew a 2 1/2" Half-Square Triangle to each side of the unit in the same manner. Press. Repeat until you have 20 square-in-a-square blocks measuring 4 1/2". See Diagram 1.
2. Sew a 2 1/2" H x 4 1/2" Triangle to each side of a 4 1/2" Square, sewing to opposite sides first. Press. Repeat until you have 12 units. Sew a 4 1/2" Half-Square Triangle to each side of the unit in the same manner. Press. Repeat until you have 12 square-in-a-square blocks measuring 8 1/2". See Diagram 1.
3. Sew a pair of Right Triangles to an Isosceles Triangle to form a triangle-in-a-square block. Repeat until you have 62 blocks. Sew two triangle-in-a-square blocks together, matching up the bases of the Isosceles Triangles to form a diamond-in-a-rectangle block. Repeat until you have 31 blocks measuring 4 1/2" x 8 1/2".
4. Using the quilt photo as a reference, arrange the blocks 7 across by 9 down. Tip and turn the blocks to achieve desired pattern, playing with the colors.
5. Sew 7 blocks together to form a row. Repeat to form 8 more rows.
6. Sew the 9 rows together to form the quilt top.

Finishing:

1. Layer the backing, batting and quilt top. Quilt by hand or machine, as desired.
2. Sew binding strips together to form one long strip. Fold wrong sides together, lengthwise, and press.
3. With a 1/4" seam, sew the raw edges of the binding to the edges of the right side of the quilt. Turn the folded edge of the binding to the back side of the quilt and stitch in place by hand, mitering the corners.
