Hunter's Star Quilt

Fabric Requirements:

Notes:

• Finished Size: 40" x 56"
• All seam allowances are 1/4" unless noted.
• WOF = width of fabric

Piecing the Block:

1. With one mint green and one dark pink Half-Square Triangle, place the right sides together, aligning the outside edges. Sew a seam along the long side of the triangle. Press the seam open to minimize the bulk when piecing the block.
2. Repeat step 1 with the remaining Half-Square Triangles. You will make 240 Half-Square Triangle units.
3. Take 4 of the pieced Half-Square Triangles and piece into a four patch as shown in Diagram 1. First piece the 2 Squares in each row together and then sew the rows together. Press.
4. Repeat step 3 for 29 more times to make a total of 30 units.
5. Sew a dark pink 4 1/2" Square to the right side of each the 30 units made in steps 3 and 4. Press. See Diagram 2.
6. Take 4 of the pieced Half-Square Triangles and piece into a four patch as shown below. First piece the 2 Squares in each row together and then sew the rows together. Press. See Diagram 3.
7. Repeat step 3 for 29 more times to make a total of 30 units.
8. Sew a mint green 4 1/2" Square to the left side of the 30 units made in steps 6 and 7. Press. See Diagram 4.
9. Take a piece from step 5 and a piece from step 8 and sew together as shown below. Press. See Diagram 5.
10. Repeat step 9 until you have a total of 30 blocks. Press.

Assembling the Quilt Top:

1. Sew 4 blocks together as shown below to get a star in the center of each. See Diagram 6.
2. Continue piecing 4 blocks together in this manner until you have a total of 6 blocks.
3. Piece 2 of these larger star blocks together to make a row. Press.
4. Make 2 more rows with 2 larger star blocks in each row. Press.
5. Sew the 3 rows together to make the quilt center.
6. Sew the 1 1/2" x WOF red strips together lengthwise. Press.
7. Cut the strip into two 1 1/2" x 48 1/2" and two 1 1/2" x 34 1/2" pieces.
8. Sew the 1 1/2" x 48 1/2" strips to the long sides of the quilt. Press.
9. Sew the 1 1/2" x 34 1/2" strips to the remaining two sides of the quilt. Press.
10. Sew the 3 1/2" x WOF strips in mint green together lengthwise. Press.
11. Cut the strip into two 3 1/2" x 50 1/2" and two 3 1/2" x 40 1/2" pieces.
12. First sew two of the 3 1/2" x 50 1/2" pieces to the long sides of the quilt. Press.
13. Sew the two 3 1/2" x 40 1/2" pieces to the remaining two sides of the quilt. Press.

Finishing:

1. Layer the backing, batting, and quilt top. Quilt by hand or machine, as desired.
2. Sew the binding strips together to form one long strip. Fold the binding in half, lengthwise, with wrong sides together and press.
3. Sew the raw edges of the binding to the edges of the right side of the quilt. Turn the folded edge of the binding to the back side of the quilt and stitch in place by hand, mitering the corners.
