Notes:
- Finished Size: 44 1/2" x 63 1/2"
- All seam allowances are 1/4" unless noted.
- * = Adhere fusible adhesive to back of fabric before die-cutting the shapes.
- WOF = width of fabric
Making the Blocks:
- Place one large Gear and four small Gears onto a 18 1/2" background square. Using the quilt photo as a guide, arrange the Gears on the background block. Heat fuse in place with an iron. Repeat to make two more blocks.
- Using a zigzag or decorative stitch, sew the Gears in place on both the inside and the outside. (Hint: if one of the fabrics isn't showing up well on the background fabric, use a thread that will accentuate the Gear outline).
- Place two large Gears and one small Gear onto a 18 1/2" background square. Using the quilt photo as a guide, arrange the Gears on the background block. Heat fuse in place with an iron. Repeat to make two more blocks.
- Using a zigzag or decorative stitch, sew the Gears in place on both the inside and the outside.
Assembling the Quilt Top:
- Arrange the blocks, two across by three down. Turn the blocks to achieve the desired look.
- Sew the blocks into rows. Press. Then sew the rows together to form the quilt center.
- Sew the 1 1/2" x WOF Strips of the brown stripe fabric together to make one long Strip. Press. Cut into two 1 1/2" x 54 1/2" and two 1 1/2" x 38 1/2".
- Sew the 54 1/2" Strips onto the long sides of the quilt center. Press.
- Sew the 38 1/2" Strips onto the top and bottom of the quilt center. Press.
- Sew the 3 1/2" x WOF Strips of background fabric together to make one long Strip. Press. Cut into two 3 1/2" x 56 1/2" and two 3 1/2" x 44 1/2".
- Sew the 56 1/2" Strips onto the long sides of the quilt center. Press.
- Sew the 44 1/2" Strips onto the top and bottom of the quilt center. Press.
- Using the quilt photo as a guide, place the remaining 6 small Gears on opposite corners of the quilt border. The Gears will hang over the edge of the quilt top. Heat fuse in place with an iron. Trim off the excess.
- Using a zigzag or decorative stitch, sew the Gears in place on both the inside and the outside.
Finishing:
- Sew the two 1 1/2 yd pieces of the backing fabric together along the selvedge edge to make the backing.
- Layer the backing, batting and quilt top. Quilt by hand or machine, as desired.
- Sew the binding strips together to form one long strip. Fold the binding in half, lengthwise, with wrong sides together and press.
- With a 1/4" seam, sew the raw edges of the binding to the edges of the right side of the quilt. Turn the folded edge of the binding to the back side of the quilt and stitch in place by hand, mitering the corners.
