Notes:
- Finished Size: 43" x 43"
- All seam allowances are 1/4" unless noted.
- WOF = width of fabric
- To make piecing the curved seams easier, find and mark the center of each of the curved seams. Match the centers and pin. Do the same with the ends. A few extra pins in between will hold everything in place while sewing the seam.
- The Pies and Pieces die offers a great opportunity to play with lots of different fabric and scraps. Divide fabrics into color categories as listed and use the diagram for color placement.
Piecing the Quilt Top:
Making Circle Block A:
- To assemble the pieced arcs, combine two end arc points, three inside arc points and two outside arc points. Placing right sides together and aligning the edges, sew the points together to form an arc. See Diagram 1. Repeat for all 4 pieced arcs.
- To construct the quarter-circle blocks, finger press and align centers to sew a quarter-circle to a pieced arc along the curved seam. In the same way, attach the resulting unit to a background curved square, completing the block. Press curved seam open. See Diagram 2. Repeat using all 4 pieced arcs.
- Assemble the Circle A Block, sew these 4 squares together, pinning and matching arc seams. See Diagram 3.
Making Circle Block B:
- To construct the quarter-circle blocks, finger press and align centers to sew a quarter-circle to a pieced arc along the curved seam. In the same way, attach the resulting unit to a background curved square, completing the block. Press curved seam open. See Diagram 4. Repeat to form 8 quarter-circle blocks.
- To assemble the Circle B & C blocks, sew 4 squares together, pinning and matching arc seams for Circle B. See Diagram 5. Repeat for Circle C block.
Making Circle Block D:
Note: this circle is constructed differently -- in halves, rather than quarters, to accommodate the pie wedges.
- Construct the half-circle blocks and sew 5 pie wedges together to form a half-circle. Press seams all one direction as you add each pie wedge. Sew 2 arcs together along the short end to form a half-circle arc. Sew 2 background curved-square pieces together along the short end. Sew these half-circle units together along the curved seams. Press curved seams open. Alignment tip: fold each curve in half, then in half again to divide the curves in quarters. Finger press each piece and pin together, matching these points. See Diagram 6. Repeat for the other half-circle block.
- Assemble the Circle D block, sew the two halves together, pinning and matching arc seams and centers. See Diagram 7.
Assembling Blocks & Borders:
- Sew Circle blocks A, B, C, & D together as shown, pinning and matching seams. See Diagram 8.
- To add the borders, sew 4 squares together for right border. Attach to circle blocks, matching seams. Repeat for left border. Sew 6 squares together for top border. Attach to circle blocks, matching seams. Repeat for bottom border.
Finishing:
- Sew the two 1 1/3 yd pieces of the backing fabric together along the selvedge edge to make the backing.
- Layer the backing, batting and quilt top. Quilt by hand or machine.
- Sew binding strips together to form one long strip. Fold wrong sides together lengthwise and press.
- With a 1/4" seam, sew the raw edges of the binding to the edges of the right side of the quilt. Turn the folded edge of the binding to the back side of the quilt and stitch in place by hand, mitering the corners.
