Notes:

  • Finished Size: 25 1/2" x 42"
  • All seam allowances are 1/4" unless noted.
  • Fat 1/8 = approximately 9" x 22"
  • Fat 1/4 = approximately 18" x 21"
  • * = Adhere fusible adhesive to back of fabric before die-cutting the shapes.
  • WOF = width of fabric

Piecing the Quilt:

  1. Using the quilt image as a guide, arrange the Squares in rows, 9 across by 20 down, alternating between a print fabric and solid white to form a checkerboard pattern.
  2. When pleased with the arrangement, sew the Squares into rows.
  3. Sew the rows together. Press.
  4. Measure the length of the checkerboard. Cut two navy 1 1/2" Strips the same length. Sew the navy strips to the long sides of the checkerboard to form the inner border.
  5. Measure the short side of the checkerboard. Cut two navy 1 1/2" Strips to this length. Sew the navy Strip to the shorter sides of the checkerboard to complete the inner border. Press.
  6. Measure the long side of the quilt top. Cut two white 5 1/2" Strips to this length. Sew the white long sides onto the quilt top.
  7. Measure the short sides of the quilt top. Cut two white 5 1/2" Strips to this length. Sew onto the short sides of the quilt top. Press.
  8. Arrange the Flip-Flops in pairs along the white border, so the footsteps walk around the checkerboard center. Be sure to place them closer to the center of the quilt than the outside edge to leave room for the binding. When satisfied with the arrangement, heat fuse in place with an iron and sew around the shapes as desired.

Finishing:

  1. Layer the backing, batting and quilt top. Quilt by hand or machine, as desired.
  2. Sew binding strips together to form one long strip. Fold wrong sides together lengthwise and press.
  3. With a 1/4" seam, sew the raw edges of the binding to the edges of the right side of the quilt. Turn the folded edge of the binding to the back side of the quilt and stitch in place by hand, mitering the corners.
