Piecing the Quilt Top:
- Use one 33" x 36" rectangle for the background and one for the backing. Set backing aside for now.
- Layer water waves in a pleasing manner on the bottom of the gray background fabric.
- Layer charcoal and brown rocks in a pleasing manner above the waves. Be sure to place a little bit of blue water fabric in between the rocks for a more realistic look.
- Cut a light brown-colored Seal in half (below the front flippers) and place in the waves to look like he is half in and half out of the water.
- Cut the tan-colored Seals in half (below the front flippers) and exchange the tail pieces with a mirror-image Seal, arrange both Seals resting on rocks. Play with the positioning of the pieces to achieve different looking Seals.
- Cut the sand-colored Seals in half (below the front flippers) and exchange the tail pieces with a mirror-image Seal, arrange both Seals resting on rocks. Play with the positioning of the pieces to achieve different looking Seals.
- When satisfied with the final arrangement, heat fuse in place with an iron.
- Sew French knots to make Seal eyes using embroidery floss.
Finishing:
- Layer the backing, batting and quilt top. Quilt by hand or machine, as desired.
- Sew the binding strips together to form one long strip. Fold the binding in half lengthwise, with wrong sides together, and press.
- With a 1/4" seam, sew the raw edges of the binding to the edges of the right side of the quilt. Turn the folded edge of the binding to the back side of the quilt and stitch in place by hand, mitering the corners.
