3 yd | Backing fabric | Cut (2) 54" long x WOF |
54" x 54" | Batting |
Notes:
- Finished Size: 48" x 48"
- All seam allowances are 1/4" unless noted.
- Fat 1/4 = approximately 18" x 21"
- WOF = width of fabric
Piecing the Quilt Top:
- Construct "flat-nose" flying Geese. Sew the long side of a small red triangle to a short side of a white trapezoid. Repeat with another small triangle on the other short side. Press open with seam allowances toward red triangles (see Diagram A). Make 8 of these for each block, 128 total for this size quilt.
- Sew flying Geese pieces together in pairs, one under the other, pointing the same direction (see Diagram B). Make 4 units for each block, 64 total for this size quilt.
- Assemble the border blocks. Arrange 4 flat-nose flying Geese units, pointing inward, around a large white square as shown. Fill in the corners with red smaller squares. Sew block together in rows, then sew rows together, placing a pin at each intersection to match corners (see Diagram C). Make 12 of these blocks.
- Assemble the center blocks. Arrange 4 flat-nose flying Geese units, pointing inward, around a large white square as shown. Fill in the corners with smaller white squares. Sew block together in rows, then sew rows together, placing a pin at each intersection to match corners (see Diagram D). Make 4 of these blocks.
- Following the quilt diagram as a reference, arrange the 4 center blocks in a square with the border blocks around the sides. Sew blocks together, pinning at intersections to line up squares (see Diagram E).
Finishing:
- Sew the two pieces of the backing fabric together along the 54" edge to make the backing.
- Layer the backing, batting and quilt top. Quilt by hand or machine, as desired.
- Sew binding strips together to form one long strip. Fold wrong sides together lengthwise and press.
- With a 1/4" seam, sew the raw edges of the binding to the edges of the right side of the quilt. Turn the folded edge of the binding to the back side of the quilt and stitch in place by hand, mitering the corners.
