Airmail Quilt

Fabric Requirements:

Notes:

• Finished Size: 33" x 40"
• All seam allowances are 1/4" unless noted.
• Fat 1/8 = approximately 9" x 22"
• WOF = width of fabric

Piecing the Quilt Top:

1. Sew a pair of postage stamp print and assorted print Half-Square Triangles, right sides together, along the diagonal seam to form a square. Press. Repeat until all Half-Square Triangles are sewn together to form squares.
2. Using the quilt image as a guide, arrange the Half-Square Triangles into the envelope layout. (Hint: The envelopes will appear with their top flaps open and line up in diagonal rows.)
3. Sew each envelope set together. Return each finished block back into the layout.
4. Sew blocks together into rows. Press the seams in alternate directions to keep the bulk down at the points.
5. Sew the rows together until you have completed the top. Again, press the seams in alternate directions.
6. Measure from the top to the bottom of the quilt top. Use this measurement to cut 1" wide Strips to
7. form side borders. Sew side borders in place. Press.
8. Measure from the left side to the right side of the quit top. Use this measurement to cut the 1" wide Strips to form top and bottom borders. Sew top and bottom borders onto the quilt. Press.
9. Measure from the top to the bottom of the quilt top. Use this measurement to cut 4 1/2" wide Strips to form side borders. Sew side borders in place. Press.
10. Measure from the left side to the right side of the quit top. Use this measurement to cut the 4 1/2" wide Strips to form top and bottom borders. Sew top and bottom borders onto the quilt. Press.

Finishing:

1. Layer the backing, batting and quilt top. Quilt by hand or machine as desired.
2. Sew binding Strips together to form one long Strip. Fold wrong sides together lengthwise, and press.
3. With a 1/4" seam, sew the raw edges of the binding to the edges of the right side of the quilt. Turn the folded edge of the binding to the back side of the quilt and stitch in place by hand, mitering the corners.
