3-D Floral Wreath Quilt

Fabric Requirements:

Notes:

• Finished Size: 51 1/2" x 51 1/2"
• All seam allowances are 1/4" unless noted.
• WOF = width of fabric
• * = Adhere fusible adhesive to back of fabric before die-cutting the shapes.

Assembling the Quilt Center:

1. Sew 16 of the 5" Squares together to make a larger Square of four rows of four Squares in each row. Press.
2. Draw a circle, in pencil or chalk, with a 12" diameter in the center of the Square. Use a compass or a plate to do this.
3. Use the quilt photograph as a guide and place the Leaves around the circle on the background. Fuse in place. There will be extra Leaves for later use.
4. Edge stitch or zigzag around each Leaf.
5. Sew the 1" Strips of bias together into one long piece. Fold the bias in half, wrong sides together lengthwise, and press. Pin the bias tape in place around the circle. Make sure the ends will end up under a flower so you don't have to worry about the ends. The raw edges will face the outside of the block. Sew a very scant 1/4" away from the raw edge of the bias tape all around the circle. Press the folded edge of the tape up over the raw edge, making sure they are covered. Use a blind hem stitch to sew the unattached side of the bias tape down.
6. Take four of the 1 1/2" Strips of EM14 Gold and cut two 1 1/2" x 20 1/2" and two 1 1/2" x 22 1/2".
7. Sew the 20 1/2" long Strips to opposite sides of the quilt center. Press.
8. Sew the 22 1/2" long Strips to the remaining two sides. Press.
9. Take four of the 1" Strips of VW23 Sage and cut two 1" x 22 1/2" and two 1" x 23 1/2".
10. Sew the 22 1/2" long Strips to opposite sides of the quilt center. Press.
11. Sew the 23 1/2" long Strips to the remaining two sides. Press.

Adding the Half-Square Triangles:

1. Randomly pair a one of the Triangles made from the same fabric as the background square to one of the orange/coral/pink Triangles. With right sides together, sew a 1/4" seam on the long side. Press. Repeat until you have a total of 88 Half-Square Triangles. Note: 60 of these will be saved for the last border.
2. Sew seven of the Triangles together to make a long strip. All the Triangles will be facing in the same direction. Press. Repeat three more times.
3. Sew two of the strips of Half-Square Triangles to opposite sides of the quilt center. The orange/coral/pink side will go towards the center. Press.
4. Sew a 3 1/2" Square of one of the oranges/coral/pinks to each end of the remaining two strips of Half-Square Triangles. Sew these to the remaining two sides as in step 3. Press.
5. Take four of the 1" Strips of VW23 Sage and cut two 1" x 29 1/2" and two 1" x 30 1/2".
6. Sew the 29 1/2" long Strips to opposite sides of the quilt center. Press.
7. Sew the 30 1/2" long Strips to the remaining two sides. Press.
8. Take four of the 1 1/2" Strips of EM14 Gold and cut two 1 1/2" x 30 1/2" and two 1 1/2" x 32 1/2".
9. Sew the 30 1/2" long Strips to opposite sides of the quilt center. Press.
10. Sew the 32 1/2" long Strips to the remaining two sides. Press.

Making the Four Setting Triangles:

1. Sew 25 of the 5" Squares together to make a larger Square of five rows of five Squares in each row. Press. Repeat to make a second square.
2. Cut the Square in half diagonally to make two Triangles. Trim an extra 3/4" from the longest side of each of the Triangles. Repeat for the second square.
3. Sew the long sides of the Triangles to the sides of the quilt center.
4. The piece should measure 42 1/2" x 42 1/2". If not, trim to that size. The easiest way to do that is to fold the piece into quarters, lay it on your cutting mat with folded edges at the 0" line on two adjacent sides. Trim the raw edge sides to 21 1/4".
5. Use the quilt photograph as a guide and place the Leaves on each of the background Triangles. Heat fuse in place using an iron. Save the extra Leaves for a later project.
6. Edge stitch or zigzag around each Leaf.

Adding the Last Borders:

1. Take the five 2" Strips of EM15 Gold and sew them together lengthwise into one long Strip. Press. Cut this into two 2" x 42 1/2" and two 2" x 45 1/2".
2. Sew the 42 1/2" long Strips to opposite sides of the quilt center. Press.
3. Sew the 45 1/2" long Strips to the remaining two sides. Press.
4. Sew 15 of the Triangles together to make a long strip. All the Triangles will be facing in the same direction. Press. Repeat three more times.
5. Sew two of the strips of Half-Square Triangles to opposite sides of the quilt center. The orange/coral/pink side will go towards the center. Press.
6. Sew a 3 1/2" Square of one of the oranges/coral/pinks to each end of the remaining two strips of Half-Square Triangles. Sew these to the remaining two sides as in step 3. Press.

Finishing:

1. Sew the two 1 5/8 yd pieces together along the selvedge edge to make the backing.
2. Layer the backing, batting and quilt top. Quilt by hand or machine, as desired.
3. Sew the binding strips together to form one long strip. Fold the binding in half, lengthwise, with wrong sides together and press.
4. Sew the raw edges of the binding to the edges of the right side of the quilt. Turn the folded edge of the binding to the back side of the quilt and stitch in place by hand, mitering the corners.

Making the Ruched Flowers:

1. With a 2" x WOF Strip of the orange/coral/pink fabric, press the raw edges on each side of the length of the strip to the center of the wrong side of the Strip. The width of the Strip will be 1".
2. Using a running stitch, baste a zigzag line down the entire length of the strip as shown on Diagram 1. Pull the thread every few inches to gather up the Strip. The gathered Strip should measure about 17" when complete. Tie a secure knot and cut off excess thread.
3. The side with the two raw edges is the back of the flower. Run a basting thread through the bottom of the first five petals on one side of the gathered strip. See Diagram 2. Pull these together to form a circle. Put the thread through the first petal again, bury the end of the strip on the wrong side of the flower, tie a knot and cut the thread.
4. Work your way around the center and anchor the rest of the strip to the center petals. When you get to the end of the strip, tuck the end to the wrong side of the flower, stitch it in place, tie a knot and cut the thread. One flower is complete. It should measure about 3 1/2" in diameter.
5. Repeat steps 1 through 4 to make the remaining seven flowers.
6. Using the quilt photograph as a reference, stitch the flowers to the finished quilt.
