How to make a Cathedral Window Card

Other Supplies: Acrylic Paint or Gesso (Black), Acrylic Paint (Blue, White), Cardstock (Black, White), Craft Mat, Gilding Wax (Metallic Shades), Paintbrush, Palette Knife, Paper Trimmer, Pencil, Ranger Distress Ink Pads by Tim Holtz (Peeled Paint, Stormy Sky), Stamps (Sentiments, Trees), Tim Holtz idea-ology Kraft Stock (8" x 8", Classic), Water Spritzer

1. Die-cut out of mixed media board the Cathedral Window. Paint the die cut element with black gesso or acrylic paint.
2. Once dry, use a finger to lightly apply gold gilding wax over the window. The wax will pick up the texture of the paint, creating a distressed effect.
3. Apply silver gilding wax in a few areas over the gold. This should be subtle. (Tip: a very small amount of wax is needed. Use a piece of scrap paper to take most of the wax off fingertips before applying.)
4. Using the Cathedral Window element as a stencil, draw the main outline of the element on white cardstock in pencil, then cut around the shape with scissors from the Paper Sculpting Kit. Do not cut the inner window shapes out as this cut element will be inked and placed behind the die cut window.
5. With the Blending Tool, ink from top to bottom on the cut white cardstock element with Stormy Sky ink. Blend from dark to light in one color (dark at the top, lighter towards the bottom).
6. Apply white gesso/acrylic to a craft mat or scrap paper and water down with a few sprays of water. Use a palette knife to flick the paint solution over the inked area to create a snow effect.
7. With a set of chosen tree stamps, stamp some trees along the bottom of the inked element with black ink. Additionally, stamp some fainter trees using Peeled Paint ink. Then align and adhere the inked window outline to back of the die-cut window with liquid adhesive. The stamping and inking can be seen through the window.
8. Cut and fold a piece of white cardstock to a desired card base size. Cut a rectangle of black cardstock slightly smaller than the card front, so that a consistent border is created around the edge of the black cardstock when later adhered to the card front.
9. Spray the black cardstock with water and emboss the panel with the Brickwork embossing folder.
10. Mix the black, white and blue acrylic/gesso to make a pale, blueish-gray color. With a dry brush technique, apply the ink to the embossed panel to highlight the raised embossed brick patterns as desired.
11. Print or stamp a sentiment onto white cardstock, then lightly apply ink around the stamped sentiment. Cut a rectangle around the sentiment.
12. Center and adhere the embossed panel to the card front with foam tape. Center and adhere the window to the upper, middle portion of the embossed panel with liquid adhesive. Adhere the stamped sentiment below the bottom of the window at a slight angle with foam tape.
