Meet Sizzix Product Designer: Lisa Jones

All About Lisa...

Lisa has a foundation degree in Art & Design and a BA degree in Graphic Design from Glyndwr University in North Wales. She has always been passionate about drawing and crafting and loves combining illustration and hand lettering. She is strongly inspired by nature and when she isn’t drawing she loves exploring the Welsh countryside and hiking. She started working here in March 2018 and really enjoys working in the craft industry, especially seeing her designs transformed into dies and seeing the finished projects. 

What trends inspired you? 

The die designs I created for this chapter are inspired by surreal geometric repeats, and nature, specifically whimsical creatures and shrubs, and the intriguing design opportunities of combining the two. I'm really excited to see what crafters create using my craft dies, it's also wonderful to see shared inspiration. 

Where did you draw inspiration from?

As an artist, I find inspiration all around. I especially enjoy natural and botanical designs, as I love spending time outdoors in nature. Combining these in new layouts and compositions with symmetrical geometric repeats was fun! 

Tell us about your creative process 

I always start my art and craft die designs by researching trends, gathering inspiration, and ideating from there what I want to include in the set. I sketch elements from the inspiration in pencil in my sketchbook, before refining the drawings with a fineliner pen, considering the final product outcome. I then transfer all my drawings to screen and digitally edit for the final product result. I like to get creative input from the other talented designers we have in our team, we work closely together and it’s great to share design ideas creatively! 

What are your favourite designs from CH1 and why? 

I have a few favourites from CH1, and I love how many of them work well together. One of my favourites is the 666144 Geo Repeat Stamp set. I'm excited to get in the craft room and experiment die cutting with my Big Shot machine and Stamping with the new Stencil & Stamp tool.  

How do you envision creating with this design? 

This repeat geometric stamp set has great potential when used with our new 664896 Stencil and Stamp Tool. The precision alignment for stamping means you can get a perfect repeat pattern every time! I’m looking forward to creating some tiled backgrounds for cardmaking with this set. 

Do you have any projects planned with these designs? 

I’m planning on using a combination of the sets in CH1 2023 for upcoming occasions like Easter, Mother’s Day and friend’s birthdays as they all have such a lovely spring theme, perfect for this time of year. 666131 Variety Sentiments is a fabulous set that is essential for crafting for lots of different occasions. 666121 Geo Frames & Borders work with the Sizzix shaker domes, so I’ll be teaming with the Sizzix Sequins & Beads to create some shaker cards which will be fun!  

What do you consider when creating die designs?

I always consider the end purpose, what the die/stamp/stencil/embossing set can be used for. I make sure the design is a strong standalone design, as well as being compatible with other designs. It's also important the design is versatility so it can be used for lots of different occasions. I really believe Sizzix designers are in tune with the designs crafters are looking for and we really enjoy creating them.
