"I love making art accessible. Finding ways to help other artists create within their work is such a privilege. Sizzix is such a unique company because of the tools that they offer artists. The Registration Tool blew my mind – offering a way to preemptively plan and for it’s methodical placement capabilities. Q&A with CAT KERR

When did you start getting interested in art & design?

I have been creating in one form or another for most of my life. As a young girl, I would sew clothing for my dolls, dream up stories with my wild imagination, and choreograph ice skating routines while listening to the imaginary music I composed in my mind. My creative spirit has always been chaotic and untamed, and it is my constant companion. When my own children were young, my creative nature latched onto the most accessible medium I could find: paper. Scrapbooking turned into card making, which turned into ATCs (Artist Trading Cards) and then into paper art. But by this point, my creative spirit was becoming restless. It was a nagging, uneasy spirit, in search of what I did not know.

I satisfied that hunger for the next 15 years by developing my artistic skills. I delved into resin, wood, metal, and fiber, gaining knowledge through classes and partnerships. I jumped at opportunities and created my own. Eventually, I realized that as an artist in training, what I seek cannot be found. Creativity is not something I accidentally discovered along the way; it is a part of me, and it has to be nurtured and tended to. Like my aging bones eager for mobility or the metronome of my breathing lungs, my creative spirit is like a prayer to my life that whispers: “Create from the inside out,” and so I do, every minute of every day.

Is there anything you specialise in or enjoy doing the most?

As a self-taught artist and a maker of things, I have no formal training in the arts. I have no degree, no area of expertise, no medium of choice, or go-to techniques that characterize my point of view. Instead, what I do have is an open field of endless possibilities. As an artist in training, my devotion is a constantly shifting compass needle, pointing the way to new and exciting creative adventures. A creative mad scientist, eager to discover new techniques or as a kid at heart, easily excitable and almost always covered in paint. Whatever the case may be, it’s my heart, not my head, that always leads me to what I enjoy most: everything.
What or who inspires your creativity?

Inspiration comes at me fast and furiously. Every speck of matter nudges me in a different and new direction. The note in a song, the rust on the ground, the words in a poem. When it catches my third eye, it encourages and creates a different version of me. Constantly in motion, I am a different artist today than I was yesterday. Today, I am inspired by composer Abel Korzeniowski, fashion designer Betsy Johnson, and artist @Ponarsher on Instagram. Tomorrow, only the wind knows for sure.
What was the inspiration behind your stamp and stencil designs for Sizzix Studio and how did these inform your collection with Sizzix?

Mixed Media is a random art form. It takes a little bit from this and a little bit from that, and fine-tuning is in the final stages of creating. When I first heard what would be included in the sets (three stencils and one stamp set), I thought, this kit will offer everything a creative needs to design a layered, textured piece of art.” So, with so much to choose from, my inspiration began by asking “How can my designs encourage random creativity?” Instead of offering kits with one theme throughout, I wanted to provide a random set of ideas with a mix of shapes that could be used in various ways to maximize the creative outcome. I kept this in mind throughout the design process. Ultimately, I wanted to encourage play without overthinking

How would you describe your aesthetic and how did you develop your style?

My work has been featured in over 80 publications, from art journaling to jewelry and fashion. It’s hard for me to describe my style because when I look back at the work, my style changes with the tide and influence. However, when it comes to my design aesthetic, texture, dimension, and grunge, they always have a place at my creative table.

Over the years, I’ve incorporated these design choices by layering, embedding, stitching, and building. I'm after something that encourages the viewer to come in for a closer look. Plus, anything rusty, vintage, and weatherworn makes my heart go pitter-patter.

What advice would you give a beginner who wants to move into mixed media art?

When working with oils, there’s the fat over lean rule; when working with watercolor, there’s the light to dark rule; when working with clay, there’s proportion and balance to keep in mind, but when it comes to Mixed Media, and you're just getting started, the only rule you have to remember, is that there are no rules. Aside from composition and color theory, almost every medium has a set of rules to follow to achieve the desired results, but when you’re working in Mixed Media, you have permission to try anything. So my advice is to play. Lead with joy and curiosity, let your mind flow, and let the rules fall where they may.
