Q&A with shelly kim

Shelly, your creative journey began as a way to relieve stress. Can you share what that transition looked like from hobby to full-time passion?

It all started in 2015 when I was working a full-time job that left me feeling unhappy and burnt out. To bring some joy into my days, I began decorating my cubicle with colorful, hand-lettered affirmations. What began as a simple stress-relief hobby quickly became a creative outlet that reignited my passion for art. As I shared my work on Instagram, a community formed, and I realized the impact my art could have. That encouragement gave me the inspiration to pursue my art + lettering full-time, and I haven’t looked back since!

You’re known for your joyful lettering and illustrations. Where do you draw inspiration for your playful, feel-good designs?

I find my inspiration anywhere! A trip to my local coffee shop, trying new food places, taking a walk with my pup, Max and of course, the different seasons spark new ideas too! I love observing the colors, textures, and moods around me and translating them into my art. Something simple like the fruits and veggies I see while grocery shopping can also become the inspiration for my illustrations.

Your style feels so welcoming for beginners. Was that intentional in how you designed this collection?

Absolutely! I remember how intimidating it felt when I first started my art journey. So, I designed this collection with simplicity in mind. The elements are versatile and easy to use for almost any project, encouraging crafters of all levels to jump in and start creating all the things they wish existed.

What do you hope people feel when they use your designs in their own projects?

I hope they feel empowered, happy, and joyful. My wish is for crafters to experience the same sense of fulfillment and happiness that I do when creating! If my designs can spark a moment of inspiration or bring a smile to someone’s face, then I’ve achieved my goal.

As a self-taught artist, what advice would you give to someone just starting out in lettering or DIY art?

Start with art mediums that make you feel excited and happy. Also, don’t be afraid to just have fun and make mistakes. It’s all part of the learning process! Share your work with the world and most importantly, enjoy the journey! Remember, every artist starts somewhere and your unique voice is what will set you apart!

Your mission to spread positivity through art is so powerful. What does that look like in your day-to-day creativity?

Love and positivity is at the heart of everything I create. Whether I’m designing a new lettering piece, developing a DIY project, or preparing a class, I always aim to combine uplifting messages and fun colors. My hope is that anyone who sees my artwork feels a sense of joy and encouragement. It’s about creating art that not only looks beautiful but also resonates emotionally.

You’ve built a strong creative community online. How has that community shaped your work and outlook as an artist?

I owe it all to my community! They have always been incredibly supportive and inspiring since the very beginning. Their encouragement fuels my creativity and motivates me to keep pushing boundaries. Seeing others engage with my work, share their own creations, and grow alongside me has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my art journey!
